Increasing Alcohol-Related Mortality

Increasing Alcohol-Related Mortality

January 17, 2020

A January 2020 study by White, Castle, Hingson, and Powell published in “Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research” found significant increases in mortality rates due to alcohol consumption over the last 2 decades. Additionally, alcohol-related emergency department visits and hospitalizations have increased. The increase was especially significant in women and middle-age or older adults. The number of alcohol-related deaths in age 16 and older in the US increased from 35,914 in 1999 to 72,558 in 2017. This is an increase of 50.9% in the alcohol-related death rate. PC4S encourages adults to make educated decisions and to educate youth about the risk of substance misuse.
